“But SCOM is only for Microsoft line of products”
This is the most frequent complaint I’m encountering when on costumers site.
First of all, I want to tell you that the answer is: “NO”
SCOM 2007 R2 had long long time ago broke the boundaries of computer monitoring known for years, even the bad name that stuck to him (with no reason I might add) from his predecessor the “MOM”. All thanks to a product that is taking his bite in almost any application/hardware that can be monitored.
By now you are probably saying that SCOM that comes out of the box does not monitor non Microsoft products. Its partially true. Microsoft decided not to take any responsibility on products that are not theirs, but it didn’t stop a lot of excellent programmers and other development companies to see this opportunity and fill in the missing piece.
In this article I want to show you some of the most popular add-ins for SCOM that will make it even more powerful tool then the one you think you know.
As the number of solutions is growing I will present to you in Part 1, solution for VMWare ESXi monitoring.
One of the most popular customer environment I have encountered by now was VM by VMWare.
This huge environment must and can be monitored. There are three available solutions provided, each one have its prose and cons, and the amount of information and deep drill down to the systems directly depends on the amount of budget you willing to spare.
Veeam Nworks Management Pack
In my opinion, THE most embracing monitoring solution for VM is by Veeam. with of course a price tag per CPU socket, it’s not cheap, but from the words of any customer having one: “worth every penny”.
Veeam has made an add-on Management Pack that really covers every aspect in VM. right from the VM gust and all the way thru the Vcenter,ESXi,Hardware and Storage. All done by hundreds of monitors with a vast knowledge base included to each and every part.
